Great concept! I adore masks and really enjoy finding novel ways of adapting things into masks - never would have thought you could make a mask out of a jellyfish, but this is fantastic! I really like your colours here, too.

Care to say more about why you thought to create a jellyfish mask - what it means to you, and such?

I rarely have a definite idea of a desired end result. Drawing is a way for me to introspect. I don't know self enough to know what I'll get on the other end when a piece is done nor do I usually understand the meaning of what I've made.

It's awfully hard to give you a solid answer for what a jellyfish mask means to me.... I want to say 'it's a symbol for human existence' but everything can be a symbol for that. Mmm... okay. Here it goes. Mask = corporeal manifestation of a certain identity and jellyfish = liquid, egoless submission to existence, moving; so mask + jellyfish = insubstantial nature of human identity and the changeability of self.

:)

Good? Absolutely! I mean, hey, that's the beauty of creative work - it lets you present yourself back to you, to see things you weren't consciously aware of. Marx, of all people, puts it nicely: we (re)create ourselves in the products of our labour.

When I see a new mask, I wonder about how it would be performed. (I am a scholar who studies nonverbal performance, however, so perhaps I'm a little biased? ;)) If you have ever seen theatre or dance in masks, you will notice that visual focus is drawn away from the face to the entire body of the masked performer, who must render his/her character through stylised movement. And I suppose what is most compelling to me about your jellyfish mask is the kind of movement it seems to suggest... slow, deliberate, flowing, undulating... haha, here I am already with ideas to choreograph for it!

To say the least, this is an inspiring work. And that's the best kind. :)
